The novel · Inkshares · March 16, 2027
A wry grief-com about secrets, scandals, and a gutted house on a lake in upstate New York.
The story
On the tail end of a bad date, Anna meets a bartender in a small town tucked into New York’s Finger Lakes. James is easy to fall for, and she does, fast. Days in, she finds him tangled up with another woman, one he cannot seem to leave. He promises her the life of her dreams anyway, and she believes him.
Years later Anna is a new mother rebuilding a gutted lake house when James is killed in a car accident with his mistress. Left to raise their daughter alone and to sort the truth of her marriage from the lies, she learns the affair was the smallest of the things he kept from her.
Anna, of all people, teaches the literature of infidelity for a living. Madame Bovary and Hester Prynne are practically colleagues. Which Face Is True follows a woman who knows every famous lie in the canon and still missed the one told at her own kitchen table. It is a novel about grief, marriage, and the faces we show the people we love.

Inside the book
Anna rebuilds a gutted lake house while she rebuilds the story of her marriage. Room by room, the novel takes both apart and asks what was ever really holding them up.
