Rubber Necking

A friend of mine told me a funny story the other day. She had found a condom in her teenaged son’s backpack. She was surprised. There hadn’t been any clues to indicate that he was sexually active. She went to her husband and urged him to have a conversation with their son, knowing the teenager would be less embarrassed talking to his father about it.

Her husband gently broached the subject with their son, explaining how they had found the condom and that they needed to talk about it.

            Their son’s response?

            “Freakin’ Jake.”

            “What?”

“Jake! It’s a prank. He hides condoms in people’s stuff so their parents will find it.”

My friend and her husband were relieved, of course, and had a good chuckle about it.

But as she was telling me this, my devious mind was thinking, what a great, hilarious prank! Whom could I play it on?

And then I thought, yikes. If adults played this prank, it could wreak havoc on a relationship or a marriage. Or it could be used on an enemy, like that mean hag on the PTA, or your evil stepmother, or the kid who bullied you in high school.

And then, as I so often do, I thought, this belongs in a book…
